Obama announces end to US war in Iraq 21 Oct 2011 US President Barack Obama declares a full withdrawal from Iraq by the end of the year, as agreed in a security pact signed with Baghdad under his predecessor George W. Bush. Obama announced the decision on Friday to end months of speculation about whether the US would retain its military presence in Iraq beyond 2011. "After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over," he told reporters after a private video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. [Yeah, since those oil contracts are already set, he's going to 'need' them for Libya, Iran, and Pakistan (for Blackwater's sake). See: Weatherford Wins Multi-Million Project at Iraq's Garraf Oil Field 19 Oct 2011 U.S. giant oil services company, Weatherford International Ltd., has won a deal to build early production facilities at Iraq's untapped Garraf oil field in southern Iraq, a former Iraqi oil ministry official said Wednesday. Contracting sources attending an Iraqi energy meeting in Istanbul said the contract is worth about $200 million.]

Russia Warns of Libya Conflict After Qaddafi's Death, RIA Says 20 Oct 2011 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's special envoy warned of persistent conflict in Libya even if the news of Muammar Qaddafi's death is confirmed, RIA Novosti reported. "A guerrilla war against the National Transitional Council is possible even without the involvement of the colonel, and NATO can't continue bombing endlessly," the state news service cited Mikhail Margelov as saying. [That's right. Actual resistance fighters will wage a battle against the US-backed mercenaries who executed a(nother) coup for Exxon Mobil and BP.]

U.S. Predator Drone Fired on Qaddafi Convoy, Official Says 20 Oct 2011 A U.S. Predator drone, along with a French fighter jet, fired on the convoy said to be carrying Muammar Qaddafi in the moments before his death, a U.S. defense official told Fox News on Thursday. The official said the drone and French jet fired on a "large convoy" leaving Qaddafi's hometown of Sirte. A French defense official earlier said about 80 vehicles were in the convoy -- the official said the strike did not destroy the convoy but that fighters on the ground afterward intercepted the vehicle carrying Qaddafi.

"He was also hit in his head. There was a lot of firing against his group and he died," Reuters quoted an unidentified senior NTC military official as saying on Thursday. There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

Judge dismisses lawsuit by ten members of Congress over Libya 'mission' 20 Oct 2011 A federal court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit ten members of Congress filed in June challenging Obama's right to keep U.S. military forces in the NATO campaign that contributed to the fall of Qadhafi's government and his ultimate demise. In a 23-page opinion, U.S. District Court Judge Walton ruled that the lawmakers lacked standing to challenge the military campaign in large part because they had and have the opportunity through legislative action to shut down the Libya operation. "They have not demonstrated that they are without a legislative remedy," Walton wrote.

Lebanon: US 'plot' claim incredulous 21 Oct 2011 Lebanon's Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour has dismissed the US allegation of Tehran's involvement in a plot to assassinate the Saudi envoy to Washington, describing them as unbelievable. At a Thursday meeting in the Lebanese capital Beirut with the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Rokn-Abadi, Mansour said that no diplomat could ever believe Washington's accusation against Iran, Mehr News Agency reported. Iran has even been denied access to Mansour Arbabsiar, the used-car dealer Washington says is behind the alleged plot. Arbabsiar has a criminal record [think CIA] and is described as hopelessly disorganized by his family and friends.

Secret CIA-FBI files of NUMEC nuclear diversions to Israel could aid $170 million toxic cleanup 20 Oct 2011 Recently declassified wiretap transcripts of conversations between Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC) founder Zalman Shapiro and venture capitalist David Lowenthal reveal that illegal storage practices led to a dangerous nuclear spill. Obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by IRmep's Center for Policy and Law Enforcement, the files were heavily censored by the Central Intelligence Agency which blocked release of 225 pages. The transcript details that Shapiro and Lowenthal's interest in completing NUMEC's sale to Atlantic Richfield Company outweighed public safety concerns. This week the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) $170 million cleanup of NUMEC's toxic waste dump had to be halted after contractors experienced unanticipated difficulties handling 55-gallon radioactive waste drums.

FirstEnergy fell 2.8 percent to $43.76 at the close in New York. The Akron, Ohio-based power company had earlier dropped 5 percent, its biggest intraday decline since Aug. 8, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Contractors on Oct. 10 discovered a hairline crack measuring about 30 feet (9.1 meters) long as they sliced a hole into the plant's outer shell in order to install a new reactor vessel head, said Jennifer Young, a FirstEnergy spokeswoman.

Seven months on, Japan yet to set evacuation plans 21 Oct 2011 Japanese nuclear experts are considering widening the evacuation zone in the event of a nuclear disaster, more than seven months after the world's worst such disaster since Chernobyl. Japan faced widespread criticism over its slow response in evacuating residents near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which suffered fuel rod meltdowns after the events on March 11 and is still leaking radiation. A committee under Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission is considering creating a 30-kilometer (18-mile) radius around nuclear power plants where residents should be ready to take shelter or prepare to evacuate, a draft document compiled by the NSC secretariat and released by the NSC on Thursday showed.

Greenpeace slams Japan radiation screening 20 Oct 2011 Greenpeace called on Tokyo to toughen radiation screening and food labelling rules on Thursday after it said low levels of radiation had been detected in seafood sold at Japanese stores. The environmental pressure group said it tested 60 seafood samples bought at stores in eastern Japan operated by five major supermarket chains and found 34 of them with radioactive caesium-134 and caesium-137. The survey discovered readings of up to 88 becquerel per kilogram (Bq/kg) with the radiation believed to be from the ongoing nuclear accident.

The public-interest group Judicial Watch has obtained the documents through the Freedom of Information Act from the Food and Drug Administration detailing reports of harmful reactions to the vaccination for human papillomavirus, also known as HPV. "The adverse-reaction reports detail 26 new deaths reported between Sept. 1, 2010, and Sept. 15, 2011, as well as incidents of seizures, paralysis, blindness, pancreatitis, speech problems, short-term memory loss and Guillain-Barré Syndrome," Judicial Watch said.

Police said they expect that the federal government will pick up the bill for the riot gear equipment.

Senate blocks votes on jobs bills --'Every single Republican in the United States Senate has chosen to obstruct.' 21 Oct 2011 Democrats and Republicans tried to force versions of a jobs bill through the Senate late Thursday, but both fell short of the 60 votes [due to GOP obstruction of every bill] they would have needed to bring their proposals to the floor. In a 50-50 vote, senators blocked a component of President Barack Obama's jobs bill -- $35 billion for states and localities to hire more teachers and first responders while preventing current ones from being laid off. The funding would have been paid for by a 0.5% tax increase on people earning more than $1 million a year. Republicans opposed the tax increase.
Car Company Gets U.S. Loan, Builds Cars In Finland 20 Oct 2011 With the approval of the Obama administration, an electric car company that received a $529 million federal government loan guarantee is assembling its first line of cars in Finland, saying it could not find a facility in the United States capable of doing the work. Vice President Joseph Biden heralded the Energy Department's $529 million loan to the start-up electric car company called Fisker as a bright new path to thousands of American manufacturing jobs. But two years after the loan was announced, the job of assembling the flashy electric Fisker Karma sports car has been outsourced to Finland.

Climate risk to polar bear habitats 20 Oct 2011 Climate change Global warming is set to drive a dramatic reduction in polar bear habitats in coming decades, conservationists have warned as they called for action to help the species. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), recent trends for the extent and thickness of the marine sea ice that polar bears rely on suggests it is set to dramatically shrink over the next 50 to 100 years. The Arctic could see annual sea ice decline by between 10% and 50% by 2100, hitting polar bear populations, the IUCN said.
